Expedition

Expedition is a series of 2-week programs designed to teach Charlottesville-area high school students in-demand tech skills like data science, design, and marketing through project-based learning.

Expedition is one part of a new and larger joint initiative between STAB and HackCville to prepare high school students to learn in-demand skills in order to solve real-world problems and become internship ready.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

Throughout these two week programs, students will learn in-demand tech skills and receive basic lessons in entrepreneurship through working on solving problems in the local Charlottesville community. Upon successful completion of each track, students are given skill badges and deemed internship-ready by HackCville.

HackCville is offering two 2-week tracks this summer: data science and design & marketing.

STAB is offering a new program called Summer SPARK! which includes a 2-week opportunity for high school students to explore Computer Science, called Launchpad. During the Launchpad program, students will experience skill-based learning, design challenges, field trips to local tech companies and guest speakers, all geared toward helping them prepare for next steps in their student-driven learning experiences in Cville and beyond.

STRUCTURE OF THE EXPEDITION PROGRAM

Expedition meets Monday - Friday from 10:00am - 4:00pm. Our classes take place on Elliewood Avenue in HackCville’s clubhouses. The Data Science track runs from July 16 - July 27. The Design track runs from July 30 - August 10.

Choose the skill that sounds most interesting to you or take both tracks and get a discount.

Expedition is predicated on the principles of active learning. The best instructors are facilitators of learning, not lecturers of learning. By allowing students to spend a majority of their time on mini-projects, venture building, and group work, we minimize the amount of time students have to sit and listen to others talk.

SKILL TRACKS

DATA SCIENCE

The Data Science Expedition is structured to give students the confidence to dive into any data set after finishing the program.

Students will become proficient in a variety of data tools used in conjunction with Python to be able to manipulate, clean, and visualize data. Over the course of two weeks, students will either find datasets that they care about or partner with a local organization to form a data hypothesis, and will use Python skills and techniques to study and prove or disprove their data hypotheses in order to make concrete recommendations.

At the end of this expedition, students will earn badges in Data Science and Visualization, and will be ready to tackle any project in the field.

Dates: July 16 - July 27

Cost: $500

DESIGN & MARKETING

The Design and Marketing Expedition will cover all of the skills you need to know to become a design and marketing superstar.

Students will learn about the importance of using effective typography, color, and design principles to create stand-out graphics, how to use social media as a tool to market businesses and local events, and how to create compelling marketing materials. Over the course of the two weeks, students will use the marketing and design skills they have learned to create and launch a project to help a local nonprofit.

At the end of this expedition, students will earn badges in Graphic Design and Digital Marketing and will be deemed ready for internships in both fields.

Dates: July 30 - August 10

Cost: $500

Cost of the Program

Comparable programs cost $6,000. To make the program accessible to more students, we're currently offering it for $500/track! Take both and get $100 off.
